An UA HES Special Event entitled Contested Ground/The Legacy of the Second World War in Eastern Europe was run on October 23-24, 2015 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton AB. The conference was dedicated to taking a fresh, critical look at the famed events of 1945: the Yalta Summit, the San Francisco Conference, VE Day (May 8), VE Day (May 9), the Potsdam Gathering (and VJ Day) as well as the legacies that have emerged in the seven decades since their occurrence. In effect, the forum took its cue from a phrase (and sentiment) first coined by historian Norman Davies: “No Simple Victory”.
